blog | Feb 05, 2025

On February 1st, 2025, Canada has implemented a suite of measures to respond to the 25% tariff imposed by the US on most Canadian goods. Since the initial announcement, the following additional information has become available:

The Canadian Government also outlined a remission process for Canadian businesses to request exceptional relief from the tariffs that are imposed as part of Canada’s response to the US applying unjustified tariffs on Canada.

More detailed information is available: Process for requesting remission of tariffs that apply on certain goods from the US.

However, Canada and the US agreed to delay the imposition of the respective tariffs on imported goods for at least 30 days pending further bilateral consultations.

The United States Surtax Order (2025) SOR/2025-03 was repealed effective February 3rd, 2025.

Our Canadian Customs Advisory Services Department is available to assist importers with related questions.

Delmar will continue to closely monitor all developments around these orders including any retaliatory trade measures enacted by the US and provide pertinent updates as they become available.
