Port of Montreal Labour Relations Update

The following message was issued by Mr. Brossard VP Development, Marketing & Relations on behalf of the Montreal Port Authority on Friday, December 23, 2023:

“ As communicated in the previous message, a request has been made to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) regarding the activities at the Port of Montreal. As long as the CIRB has not made any decision on this matter, there can be no labor disruptions by either party. In the process of studying the matter, the CIRB has asked the parties to provide additional details by the end of January 2024. Consequently, there will be no short-term decision and the activities of the Port of Montreal remain fully operational.   

For a labour dispute to occur and impact our activities, several conditions must be met:   

• a party must provide a 72 hours' notice,   
• the collective agreement must be expired (December 31 at 11:59 p.m.),   
• and the CIRB must have rendered a decision on the above-mentioned demand.   

Based on the latest information, these three essential conditions will not be met in the short term.   

As of now, we are informed that the renewal process for the collective agreement is also ongoing through a mediation process.”
